Isn't there sex differentiation of male and female in mules? Can they reproduce themselves?

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey & female horse (the offspring of a male horse & female donkey is called a hinny). Of course u get male mules & female mules, but they cannot reproduce themselves - like most hybrids, they r nearly always sterile. This is because their parents had different numbers of chromosomes - mules r unable to produce viable sperm or eggs. Very rarely, a female will be fertile, & can be bred back to a horse or donkey, but males r always sterile, so u could never breed a mule with another mule.

Yes, there r male mules (stallions) & female mules (mares). There has never been a recorded case of a mule stallion siring offspring, they r always infertile. There have been about 60 cases of female mules giving birth, sometimes impregnated by a donkey, other times by a horse. There have been quite a few mixed results from these births, from 100% horse (usual with a horse sire & usually male) to 75% donkey/25% horse to mules (usual with a donkey sire - sometimes male sometimes female).
BTW: A ''Hinny'' (donkey mother, horse sire) is the reverse of a mule. Only one recorded case of a female hinny giving birth - to a ''previously undocumented combination''.

No they can not reproduce themselves - they are one (I think) chromosome short so they can not produce offspring - due to the chromosomes not being able to match up or something?? Ca not quite recall..

Mules and hinnies are sterile. The sterility is attributed to the differing number of chromosomes of the two species: donkeys have 62 chromosomes, whereas horses have 64.
